Pyrolysis Clean Coal Gasification: Video by CASE Group

Pyrolysis Clean Coal Gasification which happens to fall under the category of SBCG (Static Bed Coal Gasification) has been able to address mostly all of the environmental challenges faced by the gasification industry. This design ensures a Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) process by which all the phenolic water generated in the process is treated and used back (re-cycled) in the gasification process cycle. This takes care of the Phenolic Water concern. The tar generated in the process is professionally handled in underground concrete tanks. The tar has high fluidity and can be combusted and used as a fuel for the plants thermal applications. The coal ash generated during the gasification process is granular in form and in no way be held responsible for cause any form of air pollution. This coal ash can be used as land fill or can be used as an aggregate for making cement blocks. Thus we can see choosing the right technology not only helps the end user in preventing further damage to their environment but also save millions and millions of rupees for themselves and for the nation.

How CASE Coal Gasifier works: A short note

The products of reaction change, significantly as the oxygen to fuel ratio changes from combustion to gasification conditions. Because the mixture under gasifying conditions is fuel rich, there are not enough oxygen atoms available to fully react with the feed.

CASE Coal Gasifier Plant
Consequently, instead of producing CO2, the carbon in the feed is converted primarily to Co.

The CASE  Coal gasifier has been extensively designed to incorporate the above phenomena to produce Co in abundance by controlling the parameter to achieve the optimum.

CASE Hot Gas, Multi Fuel, Gasifier

Fuel flexibility is the main feature of updraft multifuel gasifiers. These gasifiers can operate on either coal or biomass. CASE updraft gasifiers tolerate higher ash content, higher moisture content and greater size variation in fuel as compared to downdraft gasifiers.

In updraft gasifiers, gas is drawn out of the gasifier from the top of the fuel bed while the gasification reactions take place near the bottom. As the producer gas passes through the fuel bed, it picks-up volatile matter (tars) and moisture from the fuel. Therefore, the gas from the updraft gasifier contains condensable volatiles. The design and operation of the gasifiers is such that the gas comes out at 450-500°C temperature. At this temperature, most of the volatile hydrocarbons are in vapor form, which add to the energy content of the gas. It is most appropriate to utilize updraft gasifiers in close-coupled-hot gas mode for direct heating applications. However, if the application warrants, the scrubbing of gas to remove the volatiles/ tars is also carried out.

Role of Gasifier in Gasification

Gasifier is the heart and soul of a gasification process. The equipment converts haydrocarbon
feedstock into gaseous components. The conversion takes place by applying heat under pressure in presence of steam.

It is often seen that people get confused between gasifier and combuster. In case of gasifier, there is limited supply of oxygen inside the equipment so that only certain amount of fuel burns completely. The partial oxidation process provides heat. Instead of complete burning, most of the carbon containing feed material is chemically broken apart by the gasifier's heat and pressure, setting into motion chemical reactions that produce syngas.

In Gasifier, the carbon dioxide produced by the process is in a concentrated gas steam, making it easier and less expensive to separate and capture.

Gasification for Production of Heat Energy

Coal Gasification Technology is a complex process. But, in simple terms, it can be called as the process of extracting
heat energy from combustible carbonaceous materials. Also, the process takes place in an environment where there is insufficient supply of oxygen.

However, gasification by using furnace oil, kerosene, natural gas etc has become expensive. The availability of coal reserves across the globe is high as compared to the oil and gas reserves. Therefore, manufacturing houses has started to use coal for generating heat.

CASE Group is one such company which has made good name in the industry. It is a supplier of coal gasifier for different types including pyrolysis gasifier, crude coal gas station, clean coal gasifier, double stage gasifier and others. Till date, the company has successfully installed more than 300 gasifiers in different parts of the world. They provide state-of-art gasification technologies which are environment friendly and efficient for a number of industrial applications.

How Coal Gasification Plant Works?

Steam Drum in Gasifier Plant
Steam Drum in Gasifier Plant
While many people know the basics of coal gasification, many of us have little knowledge about how a gasification power plant works. If you are reading this post, then I'm sure you will find a bit to enhance your know-how.

As the term gasification plant suggests, gasifier is the most important equipment in this case. It converts hydrocarbon feedstock into gaseous components in presence of steam. The conversion takes place by application of heat under high pressure and amount of air/oxygen inside the equipment is controlled carefully so that minimal portion of fuel burns completely. Here partial oxidation takes place and the carbon containing feed material is chemically broken down to produce 'SYNGAS'

Please note that 'Syngas' is composed of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and few other gaseous constituents. The composition of Syngas may vary depending upon the condition of gasifier and the type of feedstock.

The Syngas produced is cleaned of its hydrogen sulfide, ammonia and particulate matter and is burned as fuel in a combustion turbine. Exhaust heat from the combustion turbine is used to boil water, create steam for steam turbine generator and other industrial applications.
