Underground Coal Gasification Survey: Latest News

Carbon Energy, a leading company in coal technology sector has successfully completed an electro-seismic survey. As per the survey its keyseam underground coal gasification technology is operating as expected.

The survey was conducted by Aquatronic Solutions and produced an image of the UCG cavity following decommissioning of the company’s Panel 2 reactor at the Bloodwood Creek project, Queensland.

This confirmed the size and location of the cavity were in line with expectations with the limited gasification impact outside the defined panel consistent with the containment and control of the gasification process.

Carbon added the image highlights that as the gasification process proceeded, it followed very closely to the path predicted from the modelling.

The Bloodwood Creek Panel 2 UCG reactor was operated continuously for 20 months and gasified about 13,000 tonnes of coal and formed a cavity of about 8,500 cubic metres in size.

This led Carbon to conclude on March 2012 that it had achieved Proof of Concept during the Panel 2 trial.

In addition, the electro-seismic method also allows for continuous monitoring of the reactor growth during the gasification process.

As Carbon Energy’s keyseam technology is operating, the size, shape, and location of the cavity can be monitored to confirm it is performing in-line with expectations.

The company had $7.8 million in cash as of 31 December 2012.
