Coal Mines Identified in India: Coal Gasification Rocks

Two coal and five lignite mines having estimated reserves of 950 million tonnes have been identified for underground coal gasification (USG) projects, government said today.

“Five lignite blocks and two coal blocks of estimated reserves 950.5 million tonnes (MT) had been identified for offer to various companies for taking up UCG (Underground Coal Gasification) projects,” Minister of State for Coal Pratik Prakashbapu Patil informed the Lok Sabha.

Coal Gasification is a method of converting coal still in the ground to a combustible gas that can be used for various uses, including power generation.

The two coal blocks with estimated reserves of 243.5 MT are in Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, while five lignite mines having estimated reserves of 707 MT are in Rajasthan and Gujarat, the minister said.

He further said that since the UCG technology has been tried only recently, it is not be possible to assess its contributions to energy needs of the country at this stage.

“With a view to develop Underground Coal Gasification potential in our country for energy production, government has notified UCG as one of the end uses under captive coal mining policy,” Patil said.

Coal Minister Sriprakash Jaiswal had also earlier sought cooperation of countries like South Africa for underground coal gasification technologies.
