Natives of Woraiyur, 7kms away from Trichy will soon see a new biomass gasifier plant in their town. The commissioning of the fourth biomass gasifier crematorium at Konakarai near Woraiyur in the next few days will serve residents in and around Woraiyur, who otherwise had to travel long distance to other crematoriums.
The city already has two biomass gasifier crematorium in Oyamari and Karumandapam. The crematorium in Woraiyur would cater to the needs of the ever increasing population in the city.
With more number of people opting for modern technology while shunning the traditional practice of cremating the dead bodies using wood especially in the city limit, this crematorium comes as an additional facility in the city.
Apart from Woriayur, areas like Somarasampettai and Kambarasampettai close to Woraiyur which earlier used to be agrarian region have transformed into residential areas. This crematorium would cater to the needs of Puthur, Thillai Nagar and Ramalinga Nagar areas as well.
Earlier, residents had to travel over 4km from these areas to Oyamari crematorium which would now be reduced to 1km distance. Besides, gasifiers being efficient than that of electric crematoriums, the corporation has transformed all the crematoriums into gasifier.
"During 1998, the Oyamari crematorium which was then electric crematorium produced Rs 40 lakh monthly electricity bill. Further, a dedicated high tension electric line and high maintenance cost was a major issue," said a senior official in the corporation.
After its conversion to gasifier, the electricity bill has considerably come down to Rs 40,000. The crematorium at Woriayur has been designed to cremate 10 to 12 dead bodies in a day.
